This Weekend / Packing for Real

This week is the real Thanksgiving.  I know I live in Canada now but I just can’t get into celebrating Thanksgiving at the beginning of October.  Its still warm.  And sunny.  And the leaves are still green and on trees.

But this weekend is American Thanksgiving.  The real deal.

Here’s how my packing is going so far:

Bash / My Own

It’s the ultimate bash.  Our wedding.  R and I are excited for so many reasons – declaring our love and lifelong commitment in front of our family and friends, having all of those people in one place, a honeymoon 😉  But let’s be honest, I am pretty darn excited about the paper, the petals and obviously, the bash.  The funny thing is, for a lady who covets event ideas like I do, planning my own wedding is totally overwhelming.

We decided on a short engagement so we have a number of things figured out already:

  • Goal: a super fun party with our family and friends
  • Vibe: casual, elegant and representative of us
  • Things I care about: colorful flowers, unique paper goods, people having a good time, the whole thing ‘coming together’, DIY’s
  • Things R cares about: great food, that everyone dances, having an open bar, that the flowers are not ‘girly’, no boutonnière
  • Things I don’t care about: the exact flowers, band vs. dj, desserts, favors/welcome bags/things-that-cost-a-lot-of-money-that-no-one-cares-about,
  • Things R doesn’t care about: decor details (yes!), DIY’s (double yes!), being involved in the details
  • Details: yellow, teal, hot pink, black and white stripes, sparkly gold. Secondary colors: jewel tones.

Here is the vibe board I put together.  I use pinterest but wanted something that with one quick glance, would help anyone understand what we’re going for.

Long summer nights….

Wedding season… How many couples do you know getting married this month?

lake

Time up at the lake…  The lake is just 30 minutes from town.  Once you are there it feels like you are miles not minutes from home.

My love is turning 30!  Happy [almost] Birthday RKJ!

Excited About May

I know we are already a week into May but there  is a lot to be excited about.  Things to look forward to this May:

sweet home 1

Quick trip home to Chicago. I love my hometown in May.  Perfect weather for neighborhood walks, runs along the lake and dining alfresco.

saz takes nyc

Stopping in NYC on the way home from a BIG trip for friends engagement party.  I am one lucky girl.

SPOT PRAWNS.  So you know how some people have a favorite food?  One that they can eat endless quantities of for days on end and never get tired of?  Well, that is me and spot prawns.  The season is short – just 3-4 weeks but in that amount of time I will happily eat way more then my share of those tasty little guys.  Here is a clip of my favorite dish being made at my favorite restaurant:

It’s peony season!

hydrangeas

And hydrangeas are here!

Enjoy the rest of May!

Revisiting

This past weekend had an its-been-a-while-since-I’ve-seen-you theme to it.  First, I re-watched one of my favorite sports movies, Breaking Away.  It was filmed at my alma mater, Indiana University, and focuses on a group of friends finding themselves and competing in an annual bike race called The Little 500.  This weekend was the Little 5 in Bloomington so it felt appropriate to watch it and introduce some bike loving friends to a classic sports film.  The trailer is awful (so 1979) so here is a scene.  Two characters not in this scene are a lanky and hilarious Daniel Stern and an abs of steel Dennis Quaid.  It was Daniel Sterns first movie!

Next, on Saturday while reading a book about 20th century architecture and design I came across Gerrit Rietveld’s Schroder House.

Rietveld Schröderhuis (Maison Schröder de Rietveld)

The house looked so familiar but I couldn’t place it.  I kept reading.  It is in Utrchet, Netherlands and is one of the most famous examples of the De Stijl style of design.  Then it hit me.  The summer after high school while traveling in Europe I biked past this house!  I was with my friend and her sister, then a second year architecture student, who told us about this influential home.  Silly story to share but it made me really happy that I had seen such an important architectural gem in person!

Also revisited this weekend:

Goldfish snacks!  So good!  Why do I not always eat you?!?

Nirvana Unplugged in New York.  We listened to this in the car all weekend long.  More specifically we listened to this song over and over and over again…beautiful and raw.

And:

Late afternoon naps.  I never nap and after a late night Saturday and a super active Sunday morning, I plopped down in my sunny bedroom and took a 45 minute nap.  Amazing.

Paper / Sugarboo Designs

While ducking out of the rain yesterday I popped into one of my favorite new shops in Downtown Victoria, Nest & Cradle.  It’s one of those shops that women love and men don’t understand until the women in their lives explain it to them.  Then, said men go there to get gifts for all their women.  Anyways, right when I walked in I went straight for a tin of postcards.  They are these amazing designs from a husband and wife team in Rosewell, Georgia called Sugarboo Designs.  Check out these delightful postcards.  I picked up a few to send to my lovely man!  They also have frames, art and pillows.  Cheers to you Sugarboo!

It is hard for me to choose my favorites!  If you have time take a look at their beautiful catalogue.

Excited About April

I know we are a few days into the month but I am really excited about April!  Here are a few reasons why:

Family Birthdays celebrated from a distance.  My sister and my father are both celebrating birthdays this month and all three of us live in different countries.  A few weeks back I sent my sister a care package with homemade decorations, candy, those number birthday candles and other little treats.  I wish I could see her face when she opens it!  I still need a good gift idea for my dad.  He is a writer, a lover of books, and a teacher.  Any ideas?

April showers bring these flowers:

Tulips

Daffodils

Magnolia's on the tree in front of our house

Spring Family Ski Trip!

I cannot do that but I do love Whistler

First race of the season.  It’s only a 10k but my first half marathon of the season is only a few weeks later!
